Best 100 of Chinese Rookie’s Competition for Architecture Students

Site: Daikanyama, Tokyo, Japan

Instructor: Xu Li

Daikanyama was the origin of collective housing in Japan. Those simple apartments that witnessed history have long been demolished and became multistory intergrated shopping malls. Todar’s life in Daikanyama has been described by Fumihiko Maki as ‘Flat’, which means a convergence of citizens routine where repetitive and ordinary schedule has gradually wear down the citizen’s enthusiasm toward life.

The project aims to compromise rituality with ordinariness through using light to introduce a specific ritual sense into every space of daily routines.
